Stockholm's Old Town, or Gamla Stan, is a labyrinth of places to eat and drink, though navigating it can be tricky with the many tourist traps.  While other parts of Stockholm might boast larger clusters of good restaurants, Gamla Stan's charm and historical beauty make it a must-visit. Thankfully, there are some hidden gems here, and I will share two of my favorites. These restaurants offer distinct kitchens and atmospheres, choose whatever you are in the mood for.

Gyldene Freden

A true classic, Gyldene Freden has been a staple in Stockholm since the 18th century. This historic restaurant has seen generations of “Stockholmare” and cultural icons such as Bellman, Anders Zorn, Evert Taube, and Vilhelm Moberg. The walls of Gyldene Freden seem to echo with the history and stories of those who have dined here through good times and bad.

In this candlelit venue, you'll be treated to traditional Swedish cuisine, or "husmanskost," with dishes showcasing the seasonal abundance of Swedish nature. I highly recommend starting with the S.O.S (a traditional way of serving pickled herring) and following with "Dillkött" (tender boiled veal or beef in a creamy dill sauce). These dishes are cooked to perfection and offer an authentic taste of Sweden. And don’t forget to order Swedish "brännvin" schnapps to complement your meal—it's a part of the traditional experience. While their meatballs are always on the menu, I believe there are better places in Stockholm for that dish, which I'll cover in another post. For now, focus on the other Swedish classics at Gyldene Freden—you won't be disappointed.

The Cork

For a cozy, less-known option, head to The Cork. This charming restaurant specializes in Portuguese wine and Mediterranean cuisine. Run by a couple, Anna and Alex, The Cork offers a warm, family-like atmosphere that immediately makes you feel at home. As much as The Cork is a restaurant it's also a pure wine bar, where I dare to say they put their biggest focus. The staff are knowledgeable about their wine selection and attentive to your preferences. Their supply of Portuguese bottles is impressive!

When dining here, I recommend trying their generous platters of charcuterie and cheese. Another highlight is their Santa Rosalia, a Conchiglie pasta with red prawns—so good you'll wish the portion was larger (hint to the restaurant).

Though it opened in 2019, The Cork has quickly become a beloved spot in Gamla Stan. Whether you’re there for the wine or the delicious Mediterranean dishes, you’re in for a treat. Just remember to book a table in advance, as the venue is small and already has a loyal following.
